Mechanical losses

Here's another Flint Hydraulics Tech Tip: Load weight resists the flow of oil, but so does all the friction in the mechanical members of the machine. It is an error to ignore mechanical losses in a machine. Such mechanical inefficiencies can diminish the total force capacity of a cylinder, wear out parts too rapidly, burn fuel excessively, cause hydraulic system heat, and overload the engine.

Relationship of force to pressure & area

Here’s another Flint Hydraulics Tech Tip: The source of pressure in a hydraulic system is resistance to flow caused by a load to be moved. The relationship of load weight (or force) to pressure is graphically represented in the Pressure Triangle, which describes the mathematical formulas used to solve for the variables:
F/p = A
F/A = p
p x A = F
“Force” (F) in these formulas is the weight of the load. Pressure (p) is directly proportional to load weight and inversely proportional to piston area (A).
