Work and power in hydraulic systems
Here's another Flint Hydraulics Tech Tip: Work is the transmission of force through distance and is expressed mathematically as Work = Force x Distance. Power is the rate at which work is done and is expressed mathematically as Power = Work ÷ Time. We know that one Horsepower is equal to 33,000 lb.-ft. per minute. So if a 200-pound man carries a 200-pound load up a 20-foot staircase in one minute, the power required will be (400 pounds x 200 feet/minute) ÷ 33,000 = .24 Horsepower.
